Dispute over the first ski race

Skiing is a popular hobby among Swiss men and women. And yet, it is not all that long ago that folk first began taking it up. It was only at the start of the 20th Century that pioneers began skiing in the mountains. The first Swiss ski race with international participation took place exactly 100 years ago on Gurten, the local mountain of Bern. However, whether or not this was, indeed, the first ski race is disputed, as this contribution from Kathrin Winzenried shows.

The Arlberg-Kandahar race (or A-K / AK for short) is a sporting event in Alpine skiing that is rich in tradition. The first race took place in 1928 in St. Anton am Arlberg. Other well-known venues are Mürren, Chamonix, Sestriere and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
